Gowda Saraswath Sevak Samaj, Malleswaram, Bangalore

Prior to the reorganization of states, a few families of Gowda Saraswath Brahmins lived in Bangalore particularly at Hanumanthnagar, Gandhibazar & Malleshwaram. After 1956 there has been an influx of GSBs to Bangalore for business, to start industries and for employment particularly after the IT Industry started flourishing.

Gowda Saraswath Sevak Samaj was registered under the Karnataka Society´s Registration Act 1960 on 21-10-1978 at Bangalore with a membership of 69 including 7 life members. This was the culmination of prolonged deliberations by a band of energetic and enthusiastic Gowda Saraswath Brahmins residing in Rajajinagar, North Bangalore, who realized the need for a place to get together, where they would get to know their brethren closer, a body which could arrange religious and cultural programmes for the religious enrichment of the community and an organ which would devote itself to the noble cause of the upliftment of the impoverished, a forum for the overall benefit of the members, especially for those GSBs residing in North Bangalore.

SRI VENKATARAMANA TEMPLE , MULKY

IN OUR MODEST EFFORT TO PROVIDE THE DETAILS OF THE LEGENDARY TEMPLES OF OUR COMMUNITY WHICH STAND AS TESTIMONY FOR THE GREAT PATH OF DEVOTION AND TEMPLECENTRIC LIFE OUR ANCESTORS LED FOR INVOKING THE GRACE OF LORD, HERE IS A BRIEF HISTORY OF MULKY SRI VENKATARAMANA TEMPLE THE HOLY TEMPLE OF MULKI SRI VENKATARAMANA IS VISITED BY ALMOST EVERY GSB HOUSEHOLD OF CANARA DISTRICTS. MULKI TOWN LOCATED BETEEN MANGALORE AND UDUPI CLOSE TO THE HIGHWAY IS TRADTIONALLY CALLED AS VOLA LANKA. THIS TEMPLE WAS ESTABLISHED IN THE YEAR 1260 A.D. BY SRI SOIRA VITTALA BHAT, AN ASTOLOGER, UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF LOCAL JAIN KING CALLES SAVANTH. ORIGINALLY IT WAS A LORD VITTALA SHRINE. LEGENDS SAY THAT LATER DURING POLITICAL DISTUBANCES THE PEOPLE OF KARKALA BROUGHT THEIR DEITY, LORD VENKATARAMANA, FOR SAFE KEEPING. ON RETURN OF NORMALCY, WHEN THE DEVOTEES WANTED TO TAKE BACK THE DEITY, LORD APPEARED IN THE DREAM OF DEVOTEE AND EXPRESSED HIS DESIRE TO STAY BACK AT MULKI AND ALSO ASSURED THAT THE DEVOTEES OF KARKAL WILL GET A SIMILAR DEITY FROM A SANYASI , WHICH LATER CAME TRUE. THUS IT BECAME SRI VENKATARAMANA TEMPLE. THE TEMPLE HAS THE SHRINES OF HANUMANTHA, GARUDA , SRI MAHALAKSHMI AND SRI GANAPATHI AS PARIVARA DEVATHAS WITHIN THE PARIKRAMA. LORD NARASIMHA: SHRI VIJAYINDRA THIRTHA SWAMIJI, WHO INTITIATED THE LINIAGE OF SRI KASHI MATH SAMSTHAN, CAME IN POSSESSION OF A UGRA NARASIMHA IDOL WHICH HE INTENDED TO WORSHIP. BUT LORD APPEARED IN THEIR DREAM AND ORDAINED THAT HE BE TAKEN AND INSTALLED AT VOLA LANKA WHERE HE WILL REMAIN CALM AND BLESS ALL THE DEVOTEED WHO COME INTO HIS FOLD. ACCORDINGLY SWAMIJI STARTED THEIR JOURNEY FROM KERALA AND REACHED PADUPANAMBUR ABOUT AND HOURS WALK FROM MULKI. AS DUSK WAS SETTING IN SWAMIJI”S ENTOURAGE APPROACHED THE LOCAL JAIN KING SAWANT FOR TORCHES ( SOODI) TO CONTINUE THE JOURNEY WHICH THE KING SURPRISINGLY REFUSED. Shri Swamiji with a smile said, "When the very Lord who gives light to all the three worlds is with us why should we worry? Let's continue the journey." IT IS SAID THAT EVEN BEFORE THE ENTOURAGE CROSSED THE BOUNDARY OF PADUPANAMBUR , THE PALACE ROOF CAUGHT FIRE AND THE BLAZE WAS SO BIG THAT THE SWAMIJI COULD FINISH THEIR JOURNEY IN THE GLARE OF THE FIRE BALL. ON MARGASHIRA POORNIMA OF THE YEAR 1569 LORD NARASIMHA WAS INSTALLED BY SWAMIJI IN THE TEMPLE. FURTHER , WHEN THE KING WANTED TO REBUILD THE PALACE, WHEREVER HE CUT THE TREE FOR TIMBER IT WAS FULL OF CHARCOAL. THE ASTROLOGERS OF THE SAWANT TOLD HIM THAT IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE WRATH OF LORD NARASIMHA AND HE BETTER PRAY BEFORE HIM. ACCORDINGLY, HE VISITED THE TEMPLE AND SOUGHT A FAVOUR OF THE DEITY VISITING HIS PALACE AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR AND ACCORDINGLY EVEN TODAY ON VANA BHOJANA DAY, THE LORD”S PALLAKI TRAVELS OVER 10 MILES ON EACH DIRECTION LATE AT NIGHT , RECEIVES THE PRAYERS FROM THE FAMILY BLESSES THEM AND RETURNS. THUS TODAY, LORD VITTALA, LORD VENKATARAMANA, LORD UGRA NARASIMHA ARE WORSHIPPED WITH SHRI BINDHU MADHAVA AS THE UTSAVA MOORTHY. MULKY PRATHISTHA POORNIMA: THIS IS AN UNFOREGETABLE DAY IN GSB CALANDER AS ON THAT DAY LORD UGRA NARASIMHA IS TAKEN OUT AND KEPT IN THE MIDDLE CHAMBER OF THE GARBHA GRIHA AND ON THAT DAY MORE THAN 25,000 TENDER COCONUTS ABHISHEKAM IS OFFERED BY THE DEVOTEES WHO THRONG THE TEMPLE IN THOUSANDS. THE BHOJAN PRASAD OF THE DAY IS NEVER MISSED AND THE GRAND RATHOTHSAVM WITH FASCINATING FIRE WORKS THAT NIGHT IS EAGERLY AWAITED EVENT EVERY YEAR. DARSHANA (ORACLE) SEVA: THE DARSHANA SEVA OF THE TEMPLE HAVING A RECORD OF MORE THAN 220 YEARS IS PERFORMED BY THE PHALIMAR NAYAK FAMILY AN OFF SHOOT OF THE GUJJADI NAYAK FAMILY. HELD ON EVERY WEDNWSDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, THE DEVOTEES ARE GIVEN REMEDIES BY THE ORACLE FOR THEIR PROBLEMS BEFORE THE LORD. SANYASA DEEKSHA OF SRI SUDHIUNDRA THIRTHA SWAMIJI: IN THE YEAR 1944 SRI SUKRATHINDRA THIRTHA SWAMIJI INTITIATED SANYASA DEEKSHA TO OUR BELOVED GURUDEV SRI SUDHINDRA THIRTHA SWAMIJI AT MULKY ON THE BANKS OF RIVER SHAMBHAVI. IT WAS AN EPIC EVENT WHICH IS REMEMBERED EVEN TODAY BY THE ELDERS OF OUR COMMUNITY WITH OWE AND DEVOTION.
